We must act now to avoid climate change catastrophe
The owner and managing director of one of Scotland’s biggest wind farm operators has welcomed a new annual report from the UK Committee on Climate Change.
Rod Wood from Community Windpower, which operates seven wind farms, has fully backed the report which has called on government ministers to ’seize the opportunity’ to turn the Covid-19 crisis into a defining moment for the green transformation of society.
It comes as parts of Siberia report record-breaking temperatures in what some scientists are calling 'warning cry from the Arctic’.
Rod said: “The report from the UK Committee on Climate Change (CCC) makes welcome reading and it’s something we fully support at Community Windpower.
“The energy mix of the future needs to contain a wide range of sources, but will only be reached if the significant shovel-ready onshore wind projects are prioritised during the planning process.
“We have potential projects that will produce in excess of 1GW of clean green energy, which combined with the likes of solar and other onshore projects will play a significant part in reaching the net-zero goals.
“And it’s pleasing to see the CCC saying we should accelerate the transition to a net-zero emissions economy by 2040.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the country to take control of climate change and ensure the future energy provision in the UK is green.
“We look forward to working together with the likes of Renewable UK, Scottish Renewables and other industry partners, to ensure the government can act quickly and decisively on this report.”
