Today the Government announced a series of plans to transform the UK post Covid-19 – read the full story here.

This included an announcement by Boris Johnson to power all UK homes with wind by 2030.

In response to the information provided, a spokesperson for one of Scotland’s biggest onshore wind farm operators, Community Windpower, said: “It is great to see that Westminster is waking up to wind power and supporting the growth of offshore.

“However, it is worth remembering that onshore wind has been around for many years and is a tried and tested technology, providing cheap electricity, whilst supporting the Government’s ambitious green energy plan to power all UK homes by 2030.

“Our Scottish wind farms currently provide enough electricity to power more than 200,000 homes, with opportunity to increase that to more than 1.2 million homes with new next-generation proposed onshore wind farms.

“They will not only support the Government’s net zero carbon by 2050, but also provide thousands of jobs and inject much-needed investment to the rural economy.

“We will continue to support the green economy and the UK’s net zero carbon target but hope the onshore wind industry is given the support it needs too.”
