'Make a meal of it' for the NA Foodbank

Pete and Van

The North Ayrshire Foodbank have worked tirelessly since 2012 to provide food supplies to those who need them in the North Ayrshire area, as anyone referred to the NA Foodbank will receive an emergency package which contains three days’ worth of nutritious food.

The amazing service provided by NA Foodbank is a lifeline for many people, and at Community Windpower we are very happy to support this organisation with a grant for their summer project to feed children whilst they are on their school holidays.

In a time of increased household bills and inflation, the Foodbank has seen a higher volume of requests for food support. During school holidays, too, it becomes increasingly difficult for some families to ensure that their children are adequately fed.

This summer, the North Ayrshire Foodbank are stepping in to help with their ‘Make A Meal Of It’ (MAMOI) project, which involves guaranteeing meals for the children. The project will guarantee 60 children with a meal for each day that they attend the summer club, meaning the project could provide over 1800 meals this summer.

Moreover, in Easter, NA Foodbank secured funds to provide the 30 families in the Larder Project to provide each household with a lunch hamper to provide families with a lunchtime meal over the holidays, this doubled the number of meals provided to these families.

Craig Crosthwaite, North Ayrshire Foodbank Coordinator, said: “The holidays are not always idyllic fun filled sunned weeks. Many households experience stress and isolation due to food insecurity issues relating to feeding their children as free school meals have stopped for the six weeks of recess.

“’Make a meal of it’ provides a daily activity and a healthy meal to help households avoid missing meals.

“Thanks to Community Windpower Limited widen the projects support through the provision of Summer holiday hampers to our Larder families, guaranteeing sufficient food items for the 5 lunches a day over the six weeks.”

Diane Wood, Community Benefits Director at Community Windpower, said: “We did not hesitate to provide further support to Craig and his wonderful team at the North Ayrshire Foodbank.

“We understand that due to the current economic climate, families are struggling to put food on the table, and we hope by providing this donation we can alleviate some of the pressures put onto parents during the school holidays, when the children don’t receive their free school meals.

“The remarkable work that Craig and his team do for the community in North Ayrshire shows the power of collective effort and coming together to support one another”.
