Lifesaving support from community benefit fund

Dunbar Walking Football Club

The need for defibrillators in sports clubs has never been more prevalent, with approximately 60,000 cardiac arrests happening outside of UK hospitals needing treatment by the emergency services every year.

Access to defibrillators and used quickly by people trained to operate them, could see survival rates as high as 75%.

So, when Dunbar Walking Football Club approached Community Windpower’s BeGreen Centre about helping fund a defibrillator for its players, the application was signed off very quickly.

BeGreen manages part of the community benefit fund for the Aikengall Community Wind Farms, on behalf of Community Windpower.

The £250 will be added to previously secured funding from the likes of Dunbar Community Council, Dunbar & East Linton Area Partnership and the players themselves.

The defibrillator will help the club members should anything potentially serious happen when they’re playing.

Dunbar Walking Football Club, which was founded in 2018, sees itself as serving a need in the community by providing an opportunity to play Walking Football for everyone to enjoy.

The club is very welcoming and includes players with special needs and physical disabilities.

It helps people enjoy exercise in the fresh air coupled with a thriving social side, maybe just a cuppa and biscuits or meals in local restaurants – all of course should Covid-19 restrictions allow.

Most players hail from Dunbar, but the club also attracts people from across East Lothian, including East Linton and North Berwick.

Diane Wood, community benefits director at Community Windpower, which owns and operates Aikengall Community Wind Farms, said: “We’re really pleased to see how the community benefit fund is being used to help local people enjoy sports and exercise, in East Lothian.

“We know just how much the fund benefits people, charities, schools and other organisations across the region, and this funding could be literally lifesaving.

“We wish Dunbar Walking Football Club continued success in getting more people from across society, enjoying the sport.”
