Energy efficient Christmas lights brighten up Dunbar

Dunbar Christmas lights 2020

Dunbar Christmas lights have once again brightened up the town and delivered much needed festive cheer following a year dominated by Covid-19 restrictions.

This year the lights are the most energy efficient ever used, following a donation that enabled the Christmas Lights Committee to switch to using LED lighting.

The £2,500 from BeGreen early this year enabled the committee to plan and carry out upgrades to the meet current safety standards and also greatly increase energy efficiency through LED lighting.

BeGreen manages part of Aikengall Community Wind Farms’ Community Benefit Fund, on behalf of Community Windpower.

Graham Adams, chairman of the Christmas Lights Committee, said: “Sadly this year only a minimal number of people switched on the lights, but it was filmed and livestreamed on YouTube.

“We’re delighted that Community Windpower and BeGreen once again supported the Dunbar Christmas Lights.

“We really appreciate the support that Aikengall Community Wind Farms’ Community Benefit Fund give us.

“The money was vital support for this year’s display because it went towards the upgrade of the light infrastructure, which has been undergoing a major overhaul over the last four years, replacing 30-year-old equipment.

“We’re now able to meet current safety standards and also greatly increase energy efficiency due to lights being replaced with LED lighting.

“The committee relies solely on donations and fundraising events, and without support from the likes of Community Windpower we wouldn’t be able to switch on the lights.”

It’s not the first time that BeGreen has provided financial support for the Christmas Lights, having done so since 2015. This is the third donation.

Diane Wood, community benefits director at Community Windpower, said: “It’s fantastic to see the lights once again brightening up Dunbar and helping people feel festive after what has been a challenging year.

“We’re really pleased to once again support the Christmas Lights Committee, helping reduce the lights’ energy requirement and provide something positive for the people of Dunbar and surrounding communities.

“Changing lighting to LED is of particular interest to us as a renewable energy operator and a massive way to improve energy efficiency, therefore reducing the impact on the environment.

“The small group of volunteers in the Christmas Lights Committee do a fantastic job of maintaining the lights, not just around the Christmas period but every week of the year.

“Community Windpower even has its own light now, we are extremely proud to be part of this project, which only happen with those dedicated people that make this happen every year.”
