Community Windpower and BeGreen Dunbar are delighted to have donated £500 to Danielle Joyce who represented Great Britain in the Deaflympics in July. Danielle did absolutely fantastic at the competition, held in Turkey, winning 2 Gold and 2 Bronze medals!

Local Dunbar residents Joseph Sheridan and his wife Dr Audrey Cameron who know Danielle wanted to help and have been doing various fundraising events, one being a duck race which raised £2000. The couple have been long standing fundraisers for the Deaf community but also for the people of Dunbar. Their involvement in school fundraising activities and the particularly successful Dunbar Science Festival is just a few activities this couple get involved in. Their community spirit and drive has helped raise the profile but also some money needed to support Danielle’s dream. All training, travel costs, competition costs and everything associated with competing has to be paid for by Danielle.

Joe Sheridan said, “Most people do not realise that Deaf people have their own Olympics due to disbarring in events at the Olympics and Paralympics. The Deaflympics started in 1924 and do not receive any recognised government funding like the other Olympics. GB Olympic Swimmers compete against competitors from fully funded countries from Eastern Europe, who also receive money for winning. They have full recognition, which is what the International Olympic Committee (IOC) believes the Deaflympics should have but swimmers like Danielle do not get any financial backing so that’s why we are trying to help Danielle raise as much money and awareness as we can. I would like to say a massive thank you to Community Windpower and BeGreen Dunbar for their generous donation.”

However this does not stop Danielle!!

Over the last 4 years, Danielle Joyce has represented GB at Deaf World and International Championships. She has achieved major success through Deaf Swimming, winning gold at the World Deaf Championships in Texas, USA and double gold at the European Championships in Russia in 2014.  She currently holds 10 World Deaf Records set over the last few years.  She was also voted Scottish Women in Sports Sportswoman of the Year 2015 and Junior Deaf Sports Personality of the Year 2014 and 3rd place in the World Deaf Sportswoman of the Year 2015.  She has won several local sports awards in North Ayrshire and was given the honour of carrying the Commonwealth Baton through her home town of Stevenson in 2014.  She is a UK Deaf Sports Ambassador and as well as a Sports Ambassador for National Deaf Children Society.

Wow!! If that wasn’t enough Danielle still has various competitions to attend over the next 12 months which are the Scottish Nationals, British Nationals the Deaf National Championships & Deaf European Championships!!

Everyone at Community Windpower and BeGreen would like to wish Danielle all the best for the future.
