Covid-19 crisis fund supports struggling families in East Lothian

Roots and Fruits 2021 support

East Lothian Roots and Fruits is the latest organisation in East Lothian to benefit from our joint Covid-19 crisis fund with BeGreen Dunbar.

The organisation, which is based in Elphinstone, is looking to support families who are struggling to feed their children during school holidays.

A grant of £2,160 from the Covid-19 crisis fund will help East Lothian Roots and Fruits address holiday hunger, by supply recipe bags and ingredients to families.

During three weeks in February and April the organisation will use the grant to supply 80 bags each week containing, every bag will contain three recipes and a five-a-day bag.

This support for those living in poverty will help reduce social isolation and reduce transmission of Covid-19 in the community through safe and minimised interactions, while supplying fresh food.

Diane Wood, community benefits director at Community Windpower, which operates the Aikengall Community Wind Farms in East Lothian, said: “East Lothian Roots and Fruits provides a wonderful service and support to local communities, particularly helping families ensure their children have adequate food during school holidays.

“Food is a necessity, not a privilege, and people should not be going hungry nor children getting excited about when food is delivered.

“This support helps build stronger community spirit by helping those most in need and ensuring children have healthy food, including fresh fruit and vegetables, in their diet.

“It’s great to see East Lothian Roots and Fruits is part of a wider group of organisations working so hard to help families and we’re pleased we can provide them with funds to support that assistance.”
