Girls sport at Dunbar Grammar School (DGS) has at times struggled to attract pupils to participate in physical activity. However, since the pandemic there has been a significant rise in the number of girls taking part in sports clubs at the school.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted that the mental and physical health of young people is fragile. Research shows, that when girls participate in physical activity it helps to maintain a healthy lifestyle and promotes the development of key social skills. Moreover, sport directly improves sleep, lowers anxiety, and reduces stress, which can lead to better learning and attainment in school.

Sport at school also provides a pathway into local community clubs. DGS are trying to develop the next generation of young leaders, helping pupils grow into effective contributors and responsible citizens within their community through sport. DGS currently has 8 girls coaching at Dunbar Junior Hockey Club.

Through our COVID-19 Crisis Fund Community Windpower are excited to support the development of girl’s sport at DGS. Funding of just over £1300 will go towards much needed equipment and kit for the sports clubs at DGS. The new and updated equipment will ensure the girls can participate in sport safely without having to share equipment and new kit will help motivate and boost morale for new and existing club members.

Diane Wood, community benefits director at Community Windpower Ltd said “We are delighted to show our continued support for Dunbar Grammar School.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted concerns around the physical and mental wellbeing of young people, and we are happy to show our support through funding new kit and equipment.

“Girl’s sport is a brilliant way to help develop their social, teamwork and leadership skills and instill confidence at a young age. Sport is also key for the mental wellbeing of young girls and at Community Windpower we want to show our support. We know there is incredible talent at Dunbar Grammar School, and we hope our support can continue the pupil’s development”.
