Community Windpower’s Student Placement Scheme continues to impress - 11th February

Helping students obtain experience and employment within the wind energy industry.

Community Windpower (CWL) currently has service level agreements in place with both, West College Scotland (Greenock campus) and Ayrshire College (Ayr campus).

The agreements with the two colleges mean that once a year, two students from each college work at Community Windpower’s head office on a three week work placement.  The placements provide the students with hands-on experience and direct insight into both the Development and Operation of our wind farms.  The placement also involves visiting operational wind farm sites in Scotland with the opportunity to meet and talk to qualified wind turbine technicians.

The placements are designed to provide the students with valuable real world experience within the industry to aid their continued career progression and provide them with an insight in to the important role of turbine technicians.

To date, CWL have hosted 11 students from West College Scotland’s Greenock campus who were enrolled on the electrical engineering course.  A number of these students have since gone on to find employment within the wind industry following the placements, something which CWL are very proud of.

The scheme with Ayrshire College successfully commenced last year with the first two students attending their placement in April 2015. Both students have completed their course and both have been successful in finding employment in the wind energy industry.

One of the students from Ayrshire College, Andrew Brown, who attended the placement scheme in April 2015 said "I thoroughly enjoyed my time with CWL.  I have learned a lot and I am very sure this will benefit myself for future employment". Andrew has since finished his studies and has found employment within the wind energy industry.

CWL continue to annually sponsor the West College Scotland’s Graduation and Awards Ceremonies, specifically sponsoring the HNC Engineering Systems award.

Community Windpower, West College Scotland and Ayrshire College are all committed to the continued success of the Student Placement Schemes and will ensure they continue to provide valuable and rewarding opportunities for future students looking to enter the wind energy industry.
