Community Windpower supports residents to create green hedgerow.

Hedgerow

A grant from the community benefit fund associated with Aikengall Community Wind Farm, which is managed by BeGreen Dunbar, has been approved to help the members of the Hunter Steading Residents Association.

The residents have been provided with £1,000 from the community benefit fund to help spruce up and rewild a stretch of roadside, that is en route to Aikengall Community Wind Farms.

Hunter Steading Residents Association want to erect fencing, and plant new hedgerows on the roadside to provide a habitat for local wildlife. This will not only improve the aesthetics of the area but will help to support the healthy functioning of the local ecosystem.

The Association wants to plant a mixed hedgerow including plants, shrubs, and trees to create a versatile hedgerow, capable of hosting a diverse range of wildlife.

The Association plans to complete all the work themselves, providing a brilliant opportunity for the community to get involved with the creation of an important habitat. Hedgerows are currently under threat from removal and poor management but remain important features in the landscape, offering food and shelter for wildlife.

Diane Wood, community benefits director at Community Windpower said: “The grant to implement a fence and hedgerow at Hunter Steading is something we did not hesitate to approve. This will not only provide a brilliant opportunity for the residents to engage with nature, but also improve the aesthetics of the road that leads to Aikengall Community Wind Farms.

“Hedgerows are threatened habitats and the creation and management of these biodiverse niches is vital.

“We are happy to support organisations who also care for the natural world and have the enthusiasm to support wildlife.”

Community Windpower is also running a joint Covid-19 crisis fund with BeGreen for people and organisations currently suffering due to the pandemic.
