Community Windpower appoints RJ McLeod for Sneddon Law

Community Windpower (CWL) has awarded Scottish company RJ McLeod the main contract to undertake civil engineering works for the 30MW Sneddon Law Community Wind Farm in East Ayrshire.

The consented wind farm is now currently under construction and due to be completed in 2023. RJ McLeod has worked on three previous projects for Community Windpower; Sneddon Law marks the fourth. Most recently, Glasgow-based RJ McLeod undertook the construction and installation of our 81.7MW Aikengall IIa Community Wind Farm in East Lothian, which was commissioned in December 2021.

Community Windpower is proud to champion a ‘Buy Scottish’ policy, where we work closely with Scottish companies and local businesses to construct our wind farms. The renewable energy industry is a significant supporter of jobs across Scotland, and our long history with RJ McLeod is particularly notable. In December 2022, 56% of the workers on site at Sneddon Law, employed by RJ McLeod, reside in the Kilmarnock postcode area. For eight operational wind farms, and the construction of Sneddon Law, Community Windpower has a total investment in Scotland of over £500 million. This will increase to £2 billion by 2025 should our three next-generation schemes be consented (Sanquhar II, Faw Side, and Scoop Hill Community Wind Farms).

The Scottish Government aims to reach Net Zero emissions by 2045; Sneddon Law Community Wind Farm will contribute to this target, generating enough electricity to power 29,600 homes, and displacing around 50,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide, per year. Once fully operational, Sneddon Law will be playing in a role in reducing our dependency on fossil fuels by generating clean, green, carbon-free energy. Furthermore, over its operational lifetime of 25 years, Sneddon Law will provide a total of £1,875,000 in community benefits to create established legacies in the host communities surrounding it.

Rod Wood, Managing Director at Community Windpower, said: “Breaking ground at Sneddon Law is a huge milestone for us, and it was a fantastic way to round off 2022. We value the close partnership that we have with everyone at RJ McLeod, and the quality of their work is testament to their dedication and deep-rooted presence across Scotland. Supporting Scottish jobs and industry has been a tenet of our business since its inception, and we are delighted that we can continue to support so many highly skilled workers in the local area with developments like Sneddon.”

Bruce Clark, Joint Managing Director at RJ McLeod, said: “We’re delighted to be awarded the contract to construct Sneddon Law Community Wind Farm. This is our fourth project with Community Windpower who recognise the skills and experience of our staff and operatives as well as our track record of using local resources and we look forward to jointly delivering this important energy asset.”
