Community Windpower and BeGreen grant supports foodbank
When Dunbar Basics Foodbank approached our joint Covid-19 crisis fund with BeGreen Dunbar to support a new feasibility study, a grant of £2,205 was quickly approved.
The study is looking at the viability and advantages of issuing people that the foodbank helps with High Street vouchers and store cards.
This offers the opportunity for individuals and families to make their own choices when purchasing food and supplies, while also supporting our local High Streets, primarily the one in Dunbar.
But Dunbar Basics Foodbank needed money to provide fuel top up cards, a vital part of supporting people heating food and their homes, which is what our grant will fund.
Most people who need help from the foodbank, also live in fuel poverty, which is why the fuel top up cards are so important.
The overall trial is making positive steps and people value the dignity from having more control over their purchasing power.
And the study has received fantastic support from local shops, as they also face the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dunbar Basics Foodbank is a registered charity based at Dunbar Parish Church and has been supporting the community for seven years.
It operates independently from the church and caters for a wide range of people across the local community.
Diane Wood, community benefits director at Community Windpower, which operates the Aikengall Community Wind Farms in East Lothian, said: “We’re fully aware of the plight many people and families find themselves in due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which is why we’re fully behind the fantastic work carried out by Dunbar Basics Foodbank.
“The grant will provide something vital, particularly at this time of year, as many struggle to heat and light their homes.
“Our Covid-19 crisis fund is designed to help a wide range of organisations and people across East Lothian, and we’ll continue to look at how we can support Dunbar Basics Foodbank in the future.”
