Boris Johnson commits to legally binding 78% emissions cut by 2035.

Robb Lynch - Aikengall

This week Boris Johnson has announced ambitious legally binding climate change targets setting the UK on course to cut carbon emission by 78% by 2035. This brings forward the current targets by 15 years and is set to become law in June 2021.

The plans to advance the UK’s carbon emission targets is off the back of advice from the UK’s independent advisor on tackling climate change, The Climate Change Committee (CCC). Moreover, the International Energy Agency (IEA) have predicted a major surge in CO2 emissions from energy this year, as the world recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has also published The State of the Climate 2020 Report in collaboration with the Met Office. The key climate indicators provided in the report highlight a worsening climate.

Worldwide, 2020 was one of the three warmest years since records began, and 2011-2020 was the warmest ever decade. This highlights the need to speed up climate action globally. The climate clock is ticking and if we hope to avoid raising global temperatures above 1.5°C, stricter more legally binding targets are needed.

Rod Wood managing director at Community Windpower has said: “2021 is a pivotal year for the climate. The UK has a brilliant opportunity to be at the forefront and a leader in the green recovery and the climate emergency through hosting COP26.

“COP26, taking place in Glasgow, offers a chance for the UK to showcase its ambitious targets and to sit at the table with other nations and discuss climate mitigation and adaptation.

“We will continue to play our part in reaching net zero carbon emissions by supporting the green economy through our onshore wind farms. We hope the onshore wind industry is given the support it needs, so we can achieve these ambitious goals together”.
