3G pitch hope for Sanquhar Academy

A 3G pitch

A state-of-the-art 3G pitch could be step closer for Upper Nithsdale, after a planning application was submitted for the proposed community facility.

The application has been made on behalf of Community Windpower, which runs Sanquhar Community Wind Farm and is currently seeking permission for Sanquhar II Community Wind Farm.

If approved by planning the £800,000 3G pitch will end a 15 year wait by the community for the facility and, once work is complete, it will be handed to Dumfries and Galloway Council to run and maintain.

Local businessman Jim Walker, who has been helping co-ordinate this exciting project, said: “Considerable time, effort and funding has already been committed getting the scheme to this stage. The 3G pitch will be a fantastic community asset and we will hear in due course whether the planning application has been accepted by the Council.

“It’s important to recognise that facilities like the 3G pitch are only possible if local renewable projects, which will also help Scotland reach its net-zero emissions target by 2045, are supported.

“Financial commitment from Community Windpower for the 3G pitch, via a community benefit fund, is only available because of the Sanquhar wind farms, which also bring jobs and additional benefits to the community and local economy.”

If approved, the new pitch will be located on Sanquhar Academy fields, ensuring the school and the wider community can use this facility whatever the weather, day or night.

Rod Wood, managing director at Community Windpower, said: “We hope this application clearly demonstrates our support to the local community, by bringing unique and beneficial facilities to Upper Nithsdale for everyone to enjoy.

“We want to continue being an integral part of the Upper Nithsdale community, supporting schools, organisations, charities and children, while at the same time remaining committed to help the Scottish government reach carbon zero by 2045.”
