Current Status

The Mayfield Community Windfarm is at the pre-planning application stage. It is envisaged that the planning application will be submitted to Dumfries and Galloway Council mid-summer 2010.

A number of Public Exhibitions were recently held to provided an opportunity for local residents to view and comment on the proposed windfarm plans and community benefits and also to ask any questions regarding the scheme. Over 85 local residents attended the exhibitions over the course of the three days, providing lots of feedback.

Where is the proposed site?

The proposed windfarm is located near Rhonehouse, 8km south west of Castle Douglas and 7km north east of Kirkcudbright.

Mayfield Community Windfarm comprises of 7 turbines and would generate up to 21 megawatts (MW) of clean, green electricity for the local people. The proposed turbines would have a maximum tip height of 130 metres.

Environmental Benefits

Mayfield Community Windfarm would generate enough electricity to power over 11,500 homes and would displace almost 24,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum.

Community Benefits

As part of the Mayfield Community Windfarm, £50,000 will be provided for community benefits for each year of the windfarms operational lifetime, which is anticipated to be split between the communities of Kelton, Tongland and Kirkcudbright.

Provisional ideas as to how this money could be used include,  Employing an Educational Ranger to work with local schools, Donation of a 250kw turbine for each of the key communities, Green Energy Vouchers, Educational Presentations, Carbon Neutral project (BeGreen Energy Advice Service), Student Bursaries and funding for environmental and eco-friendly community projects, and sponsorship for community events.
