Current Status

The Calder Water Community Windfarm planning application (Ref: EK/09/0290) was submitted to South Lanarkshire Council in August 2009. The full application can be viewed via the South Lanarkshire Council online planning website.

Where is the proposed site?

The proposed windfarm is located approximately 9.5km west of Strathaven and 4.5km northwest of Drumclog. The proposed windfarm would stand adjacent to the existing Whitelee Windfarm and its two consented extensions.

Calder Water Community Windfarm comprises of 14 wind turbines and would generate up to 35 megawatts (MW) of clean, green, locally sourced electricity. The proposed turbines would have a maximum tip height of 147m.

Environmental Benefits

Calder Water Community Windfarm would generate electricity to power over 19,500 homes and would displace approximately 39,550 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum. The electricity generated would be fed directly in to the Local Distribution network and all cables will be underground.

Community Benefits

As part of the Calder Water Community Windfarm, an annual contribution of £1000 per megawatt rating of the windfarm will be provided to the Renewable Energy Fund, which is likely to amount to £35,000 each year the windfarm is operational.

In addition to this, Community Windpower Ltd have pledged a further £75,000 per annum in community benefits, including funding for an Educatioanl Ranger, environmental and eco-friendly community projects, educational presentations, student bursaries and sponsorship for community events.
