Community Windpower Projects

Davidstow Community WindfarmProjects >> Davidstow Community Windfarm >> Information & Status

Current Status

The Davidstow Community Windfarm planning application was submitted to North Cornwall Council in 2008. Supplementary Information was provided in June 2009 and later that year, the Cornwall Council Strategic Planning Committee granted consent for the application. However in July 2010, the Strategic Planning Committee overturned their decision and the application was refused. A press release issued by Community Windpower Ltd can be viewed here.

Where is the proposed site?

The windfarm partly lies within Davidstow Woods, a commercial sitka spruce plantation, and on farmland to the south west of the woods. The development site is close to Camelford in North Cornwall.

Location Map

Windfarm layout

Davidstow Community Windfarm comprises of 20 wind turbines with an installed generating capacity of up to 50MW. The turbines would have a maximum tip height of 126.5m. Part of the site is an abandoned WWII airfield and construction of the windfarm will utilise the existing concrete runways and holding pens for access tracks and hard-standings.

Layout Plan

Environmental Benefits

The windfarm would generate clean, green electricity for the local area and this development alone would provide approximately 50% of the target that Cornwall requires to meet its 2010 renewable energy target.

Davidstow Community Windfarm has its own dedicated website, so please visit www.davidstowcommunitywindfarm.co.uk for further information.

Community Benefits

As part of the windfarm, £100,000 would be provided per annum for community benefits for the local communities. Our BeGreen Camelford Energy Advice Centre has been open since March 2009, with two local people employed as Energy Advisors. So far, 87 local homes have received a free energy audit and over £10,000 has been spent on loft and cavity wall insulation for these properties.

Community Windpower Ltd have also sponsored the Camelford Football Team, Camelford Under 16's football team, Camelford Junior Rugby and the 1st Camelford Rainbows group.

Future benefits will include the employment of an Educational Ranger to work with local schools, development of the BeGreen Camelford Energy Advice Service, student bursaries for local students attending renewable energy courses at UK universities and much more.
