UK wind generation has witnessed a record 4.6GW high in the first three months of 2015. The first quarter of 2015 managed to exceed the previous record of 4.4GW recorded in the same quarter in 2014. Data analyst EnAppSys have reported that wind output accounted for 12% of the overall UK energy mix in the start of 2015.

This highlights the importance of wind power to the overall Great Britain power system and has shown a marked improvement in reliability from previous quarters, especially during the first 2 months of the year. Inevitably there were times when wind output dipped and in these periods gas power stations upped their generation.

The latest GB Electricity Market Summary revealed coal as being the dominant source of power in the first quarter accounting for 33% of the UK energy mix. Nuclear generation was up 30% on the previous quarter and represents 20% of the UK’s energy generation, Biomass accounted for 4% while other sources such as solar and hydro power contributed 3%.
