The UK is to ratify the Paris climate agreement this year - 21st September

Theresa May uses her maiden UN speech to make the emissions pledge and demonstrate Britain will continue to commit to tackling climate change after leaving the EU.

Speaking at the United Nations in New York, the Prime Minister confirmed the UK remained determined to "play our part in the international effort against climate change... in a demonstration of our committment to the agreement in Paris, the UK will start its domestic procedures to enable ratification of the Paris agreement and complete these before the end of the year".

The details are yet to be confirmed, however, the UK is expected to take on emissions reductions based on an EU-wide 'burden-sharing' agreement as the country was party to negotiations as part of the EU.
