Renewable energy overtakes nuclear to become Scotland’s leading source of power – 28th November

Wind farms, hydro power plants and other clean technologies were responsible for providing the single largest source of electricity to Scotland for the first time, during the first half of 2014, revealed industry figures published on Thursday.

Renewables produced nearly one third more electricity than nuclear, coal or gas in the first six months of 2014, reaching a record 10.4 terawatt hours (TWh).

Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, Niall Stuart, said the record figures marked “an historic” moment for the renewable energy industry, as well as a major milestone for the Scottish Government’s plans to generate 100% of electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
