A new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has found that the renewable energy sector employs 7.7 million people across the globe, increasing by more than one million (18%) from last year.

Renewable energy is continuing to prove itself as a major global employer, with increases thought to be deriving from declining technology costs thereby creating more jobs in installation, operations and maintenance. This trend is expected to continue over the next few years as the business case for renewable energy strengthens.

The largest growth in jobs was in Asia as China, India, Indonesia, Japan and Bangladesh all saw major increases consequently reducing the EU and USA’s dominance in the renewable job market, now representing 25% of global renewable energy jobs compared to 31% in 2012.

The solar PV industry is the largest employer offering 2.5 million jobs worldwide, followed by liquid biofuels and wind power which surpassed 1 million jobs for the first time this year. Further investment in the renewable energy sector will significantly increase job numbers worldwide, IRENA’s research estimates that doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030, would result in more than 16 million jobs worldwide.
