Glacier retreat 'categorical evidence' of climate change - 14th December

New research on records spanning 400 years shows that glaciers are retreating 99% due to climate change.  The study, published in Nature Geoscience, has found the shrinking of mountain glaciers in five continents has occurred due to the Earth warming.

The study claims that the level of glacier retreat would be improbable without the influence of climate change.  Records of 37 glaciers across North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australasia were examined as part of the research.

Lead author Professor Gerard Roe explained: "our paper demonstrates that the worldwide retreat of glaciers necessarily requires a climate change that is centennial in duration and global in extent".

Of the 37 glaciers studied, the results suggest that for all but one, there is over a 90% probability that ice is retreating as a result of climate change.  For 21 of those glaciers studied, the probability rises to 99%.
