Climate Change leaves UK ‘exposed’ to more floods and heatwaves – 24th November

CCC

Government advisor warns climate change will risk thousands of lives through extreme weather events.

Professor Lord Krebs, who chairs an expert group of the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), said the UK is dangerously ‘exposed’ to increasingly extreme weather as a consequence of climate change.  Thousands of lives could be lost in heatwaves and unnecessary flood damage could occur if money is not spent on flood defences.

Lord Krebs also called on Britain and other countries to take further action to cut greenhouse gas emissions as global warming could have “profound implications” even for wealthier countries such as the UK.

A Royal Society report, published later this week will examine methods to protect lives and property and focus on measures to adapt to climate change and reduce disaster risk.
