Young SET Ambassadors
Community Windpower Ltd is proud to be working in partnership with Dr Aileen Lothian and the Young SET Ambassadors programme based at Edinburgh University. Young SET (Science, Engineering & Technology) Ambassadors focuses on encouraging talented young people to consider careers in the science, engineering and technology sectors, and is designed to help increase the pupil’s education and knowledge about these areas.
Dr. Aileen Lothian is the Director and leader of the programmes which are delivered to schools and SET companies in the East Lothian, Midlothian, West Lothian and Edinburgh areas.
The Young SET Ambassadors have built up a very strong collaboration with Community Windpower Ltd who has provided excellent support over the last year, through sponsorship totalling £10,000. This has helped grow, develop and strengthen the Young SET Ambassadors programmes for the area.
Groups of students from Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian go out to Aikengall Community Windfarm, owned and operated by Community Windpower Ltd, for educational visits. By working together we can strengthen our aim of educating our communities and young people about reducing carbon emissions and protecting our environment.
The partnership began in 2010 with financial support of £5000 provided by Community Windpower Ltd towards the Young SET Ambassadors 2011 programme. This enabled both to reach more Scottish communities and helped to develop excellent relationships with science, engineering and technology companies, Scottish universities and Scottish schools.
New programmes for Young SET Ambassadors 2012 are being developed, with further funding of £5000 provided by Community Windpower Ltd in October 2011 to support the expansion of the educational programmes for science, engineering and technology companies along with teachers, mentors and school children. Delivered programmes include energy and renewables, recycling, biofuels, wind power and how to reduce our carbon footprint. Further programmes concentrating on the importance of water and water purification are also being designed.
The continued partnership is assisting the Young SET Ambassadors initiative to grow at a fast rate with new developments taking place all the time. Plans are being put in place for further visits to the windfarms of Community Windpower Ltd.
